There are so many reasons Bellingham seems to be popping up on some magazine or organization’s list of 10 best outdoor or adventure towns in the United States. Its location on the Puget sound, Lake Whatcom at its core and at the foot of Mt Baker is key: Where else can you spend the morning snowboarding through deep powder and the afternoon sea or lake kayaking in prestine water? Bellingham also has a fantastic city park and first-class trail system. In fact, Bellingham prides itself when it comes to the amount of green space available: 16 percent of the city’s total land area is park, trail, or natural reserve. That means that one of every seven acres is somewhere to romp or just go for a nice walk. There are more than 20 parks in the city, with 50-plus miles of trails winding their way throughout the city limits. An impressive amount considering that the city itself is just more than 20 square miles. This statistic does not even include Larrabee State Park and the Chuckanut Mountain Parklands, just south of the city.
